The next morning, while Dorian was having breakfast, Basil Hallward was shown into the room.
“I’m so glad I found you, Dorian,” Basil said seriously.
“I came here last night, and your servants told me you were at the opera. Of course, I thought that couldn’t possibly be true.
“I only wish you had left some message telling me where you had really gone.
“I had a terrible evening. I was half afraid that one tragedy might be followed by another.
“You should have sent for me as soon as you heard what happened.
“I only found out by accident. I saw the story in a late edition of The Globe while I was at the club.
