It was the ninth of November, the night before Dorian Gray’s thirty-eighth birthday—a date he would remember clearly for years afterward.

At about eleven o’clock that night, Dorian was walking home from Lord Henry’s house, where he had been having dinner.

The night was cold and foggy, so he was wrapped in a heavy fur coat.

As he reached the corner of Grosvenor Square and South Audley Street, a man hurried past him through the mist.

The man wore a grey overcoat with the collar turned up and carried a bag in one hand.

Dorian recognized him immediately.

It was Basil Hallward.
