A cold rain began to fall.

The streetlights looked pale and ghostly through the wet fog. The pubs were beginning to close, and groups of shadowy men and women gathered outside their doors. From some of the bars came harsh laughter. In others, drunk people argued, shouted, and screamed.

Dorian Gray leaned back inside the hansom cab with his hat pulled low over his forehead.

He stared without much interest at the dirty and miserable parts of the city passing around him.

Again and again, he repeated something Lord Henry had told him on the first day they met:

“To cure the soul through the senses, and the senses through the soul.”
